WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN CONDUCTING OBSERVATIONS

Experienced field researchers generally pay attention to the following:

A.  Specific facts, numbers, details (e.g., signs, number of people present, decor)

B.  Maps, diagrams, sketches of rooms or spaces

C.  Sensory impressions (e.g., sights, sounds, textures, smells, tastes – be vivid

D.  Cultural artifacts

E.   Physical descriptions of the members (e.g., clothes, haircuts, accessories, habits, logos, music, etc.   similarities and differences)

F.  “Underlife” behaviors or other behaviors that seem different to you

G. Interactions between members of the subculture (e.g., formal, rowdy, cautious, etc)

H. Insider terms (try reserving a page in your notebook just for an “insider” glossary

I.   Quotes that seem important or summaries of conversations

J.    Possible informants and possible interview questions or topics

K.  The response of the members of the subculture to you (Do they notice you? Approach you? Shun you?)

L.  Questions about people and behaviors you would like to have answered

M. Any possible tensions or conflicts you think might be going on

N.  Any sense of what’s missing from the scene, silences, absences, what you think should be there

O.  Potential sources of archival research—e.g., related magazines, handbooks, guidebooks, Websites

4.   What are the reasons someone might want to emigrate from Mexico?
