August 24-28, 2009 The second week of school: Introduction to Writer's Workshop

What is Writer's Workshop?  It is an opportunity to writer using a Writer's Notebook (WN) and workshopping.   We began our workshopping groups this week as well as completed and presented collages in our notebooks.

In addition, we began writing using a template for an "I am" poem.  The document is below.  Also, we write using a meaningful photo.  We made a square the size of a photograph in the middle of our paper and wrote all the items we can see in the picture in the square.  Outside of the square we wrote all of the ideas that you cannot see in the photo such as what was going on that day or what memories it brings up.  On Friday, August 28, a piece of writing was due either your poem or a piece of prose (a couple paragraphs) that came from the picture frame activity.  Attached to this draft, I asked that students sumit the answers to three questions as a Writer's Memo

Mini Lesson: The heartbeat

What is a heartbeat? The line that keeps your writing alive.  What is the heartbeat of your piece?  What ties it together?

What to think about when you are revising.  Find your heartbeat.  What are the two lines that have the least to do with your heartbeat?  Mark them and think about whether or not you want to keep them or add information to have them relate.

What are the two lines that most support your heartbeat?  What details do you use?  Keep this in mind when you revising your writing.

Homework for Monday 8/31: Read The Chase by Annie Dillard (see document below).  Look for the heartbeat of the piece and descriptive language.

 Bring an independent reading book.
