How to get started on a story after brainstorming

Investigate: your topic (don't go straight to the keyboard)

Research: first (for example, if you are writing about golf and know nothing about it research the topic to find out more)

sources: Find the appropriate sources for your story

Pre-reporting: Interview some sources 3 to 4 times to get the angle of your story

Leads: Come up with a cleaver lead. Include the 5 Ws and H

What does an issue month look like?

Brainstorming/Story Distribution
Each month we brainstorm for our paper.  Everyone must participate in sharing ideas for the issue.  All students should sign up for an equal number of stories unless their additional responsibilities do not allow for it.

Heading Your Drafts

Drafts should be headed so that the Editor knows when it is a rough and a final draft.

In the upper right hand corner put:

  • your name, first and last, as you would like it to appear in the paper
  • the name of your beat/story
  • rough/final

At the bottom of your draft put a "#" to indicate that it is the end of your writing.
